What is a Foreign Body?
Foreign body is a particle or an object that is present in the outer surrounding environment and may enter into our body. Foreign bodies are the objects that are not meant to be present in the ear, nose or in the mouth of a person. These could cause harm without immediate medical attention and can generate serious problems like infection in the body part with itching and rashes.

Foreign body in Ear:
Foreign bodies can be present, either in ear lobe or in the ear canal. Generally, children can insert or push anything into their ear. Objects such as food particle, toys, insects, small pieces of stone or sand, button and pieces of crayon are some common things found inside the ear canal of a child.
Children place these outer objects in the ear because of so many reasons. Either they get bored, curious or copy the act of other child, playing with such objects and insert them into the ear of other child. Parents should take care of their children’s while they are playing outside the home.
Foreign bodies may cause pain, redness or drainage and the hearing may be blocked if the object is blocking the ear canal. These can be treated by a child physician or a certified surgeon with the help of some instruments, cleaning the ear canal by water or some medicated solutions or by a machine with suction to help pull the object out of the ear.

Foreign body in Nose:
Children usually put soft thinks like tissue, clay, pieces of toys and pieces of paper or erasers. This may lead to serious breathing issues which can be identified as nasal drainage on the side of the nose with bad odor or a bloody nose.
Removing such object is very necessary by the help of child’s physician, suction machines with attached tubes and other instruments. After removing the objects some antibiotic ointments should be applied to avoid any infections.

Foreign object in Eyes:

Foreign objects may enter into the eyes by any means and can cause itching or swelling in the eyes with redness. This can be due to the entry of dust, sand or stone particles and small insects. You should not try to remove these on your own; rather consult a good eye specialist to avoid any serious harm to the eyes. The doctors give some eye drops and eye tubes to avoid infections after removing these objects.

Foreign bodies in the Airway:
Chocking of the airway require immediate emergency care and attention. Usually children’s put things in their mouths and inhale them deeply which is lodged in the "airway" tube (trachea) instead of the "eating" tube (esophagus). Children between the ages of 7 months and 4 years are in the greatest danger of choking on small objects including seeds, buttons, nuts, grapes and toy parts that are not able to chew it properly.
This situation needs urgent emergency care and the most common symptoms are chocking or gagging, wheezing sound, cough gets worse, blueness around the lips, child is unable to speak and may become unconscious.
Treatment varies with the degree of airway blockage. If the airway is completely blocking by the object then, a child will be unable to breath or talk and his/her lips become blue. An urgent or emergency medical care is needed by a board certified physician. Sometimes surgery is also necessary in foreign object removal in extreme cases.
